Saginaw Valley State University is a comprehensive university with more than 90 programs of study for its more than 9,000 students. Located on a suburban campus in Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region, SVSU is committed to a supportive and empowering environment for students.

SVSU emphasizes undergraduate teaching and learning, and community-based research. In 2015, SVSU received the Community Engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a distinction achieved by only 7 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. By their senior year, 84 percent of students have engaged with community employers and agencies in internships, field placements or some other component of their academic preparation.

SVSU is establishing itself as a leader in STEM education for the Great Lakes Bay Region, partnering with businesses, foundations and school districts to improve students’ performance in math and science at the middle school, high school and university levels.

SVSU students select 2014 Homecoming King, Queen

The king and queen were announced at halftime of SVSU football's homecoming game against Northwood University on Saturday, Oct. 25. They were Tom Sutherland, of Carsonville, and Bethany Thrun, of Garden City. The two were selected from among 10 students on the 2014 Homecoming Court, which were determined by a vote of SVSU students. Students then cast a second round of votes to determine the king and queen.

SVSU names 2014 Homecoming Court

Students cast their votes to select Saginaw Valley State University's 10-student 2014 Homecoming Court. Students then cast a second round of votes to crown the court's king and queen. Those honors went to Homecoming Queen Bethany Thrun, a nursing major from Garden City, and Homecoming King Tom Sutherland, a finance major from Carsonville. The king and queen were announced at halftime of SVSU football's homecoming game against Northwood University on Saturday, Oct. 25.

SVSU student Pedro Marin named National First Year Student of the Month

Saginaw Valley State University student Pedro Marin has been selected as the First Year Student of the Month by the National Association of College & University Residence Halls. The association represents 597 colleges and universities across the U.S. and select other countries, including Canada and Qatar.

'Top 1 Percent' SVSU student Valerie Adams admitted to Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Duke

Valerie Adams has an extraordinary record of accomplishment at Saginaw Valley State University. Her latest achievement: gaining acceptance into the highly competitive Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Duke University. An exercise science major from Washington Township, Adams will graduate from SVSU in May 2015 and begin the three-year program at Duke next fall. The 2011 graduate of Rochester Stoney Creek High School was confident about her choice of college major.

Students to perform in SVSU's 'The Grapes of Wrath'

Saginaw Valley State University's Department of Theatre will produce the play, "The Grapes of Wrath," to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the novel. This 1990 Tony Award and Outer Critics Circle Award winning play follows the Joad family in their journey from the dust bowl of Oklahoma.

SVSU student from Petoskey turns Credit Union internship into full-time job

Cara Deschermeier can be described in many ways. Wife, Saginaw Valley State University student, musician, events coordinator, dancer, leader. Soon, working professional will be added to the list. The Petoskey native has accepted a full-time position as a junior instructional designer at United Federal Credit Union's headquarters in the southwestern Michigan community of St. Joseph. She plans to begin the job once she graduates from SVSU with a bachelor's degree in communication in May 2015.

SVSU alum earns competitive scholarship while attending University of Louisville School of Dentistry

A Saginaw Valley State University graduate has received a highly competitive scholarship that will cover $200,000 to $300,000 of her costs in dental school. Logan Schuiteman, who earned her SVSU bachelor's degree in biology in May, now is enrolled at the University of Louisville School of Dentistry. There, she plans to graduate with a doctor of dental medicine degree in 2018.

Grand Blanc native earns bronze medals in national jiu-jitsu competition

Caitlin Mazurek, a Saginaw Valley State University exercise science student from Grand Blanc, this month earned two bronze medals in a national jiu-jitsu competition. She earned the medals during the North American Grappling Association (NAGA) competition in Southfield on May 10, in the women's beginning no gi flyweight division and women's beginner gi flyweight division.
