Saginaw Valley State University is a comprehensive university with more than 90 programs of study for its more than 9,000 students. Located on a suburban campus in Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region, SVSU is committed to a supportive and empowering environment for students.

SVSU emphasizes undergraduate teaching and learning, and community-based research. In 2015, SVSU received the Community Engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a distinction achieved by only 7 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. By their senior year, 84 percent of students have engaged with community employers and agencies in internships, field placements or some other component of their academic preparation.

SVSU is establishing itself as a leader in STEM education for the Great Lakes Bay Region, partnering with businesses, foundations and school districts to improve students’ performance in math and science at the middle school, high school and university levels.

SVSU's Pre-Physical Therapy Students Accepted to Graduate Schools for Fall 2013

Saginaw Valley State University is announcing the acceptance of nine pre-physical therapy students into physical therapy doctoral programs for the Fall 2013 semester. "Getting accepted to a physical therapy program is no small feat and is a testament to the high caliber and hard work of these students," said John Lowry, SVSU instructor of kinesiology and adviser to pre-physical therapy students.

SVSU Students Inducted into the International English Honor Society, Sigma Tau Delta

Saginaw Valley State University inducted 13 students into the International English Honor Society Thursday, April 11, in Founders Hall on campus. To be eligible, one must have completed at least 45 credits, have a GPA of at least 3.0 in all courses, and a GPA of at least 3.3 in English courses. Sigma Tau Delta is the International English Honor Society. Sigma Tau Delta was established in 1924 at Dakota Wesleyan University.

SVSU Students Travel to Nicaragua to Help Environmental Restoration

A team of 11 Saginaw Valley State University students will devote a portion of their summer break to travel to Ometepe, Nicaragua, to assist with environmental restoration. The students will depart May 5, and return May 13, 2013. The team will plant trees as part of a long-term flash-flood mitigation project. The students will be planting various trees, especially those that are indigenous to the region such as Eucalyptus, Laurel Indio, and Acacia.

Saginaw Valley State University hosted the Writing Awards reception on April 9, 2013, at 4 p.m. in the Emeriti Room on campus.The University Writing Program is directed by Diane Boehm and has a committee including: Debra Wagner as chair, Julie Lynch, Deborah Smith, Kylie Goggins, Mark Giesler, Amy Hlavacek, Helen Raica-Klotz, and Tami Sivy.

SVSU Student Honored for Starting International Non-Profit Organization

Saginaw Valley State University student Sarah Lewan has been selected to receive the Outstanding Community Impact Award from Michigan Campus Compact. Only six students from across the state received this prestigious award for service. A nursing major from Royal Oak, Lewan created an organization called Project Sunset during her freshman year to help raise money and awareness of malaria's effects in Africa.

SVSU Students Awarded Funding through the Student Research and Creative Institute

Nine students pursuing scientific research projects received funding from Saginaw Valley State University's Grace A. and Herbert H. Dow Student Research and Creativity Institute. Grants were awarded to six projects for research on such topics as cancer, calculus, and the psychology behind exercise habits. Any SVSU student may submit a proposal to receive financial support for research or other creative endeavors. Each student project is eligible to receive up to $10,000.

'Death of a Salesman' Coming to SVSU Theatre

The Saginaw Valley State University theatre department will present the play, "Death of a Salesman," April 10-14. The play will be performed to the public at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 10 through Saturday, April 13, and Sunday, April 14 at 3 p.m. in the Malcolm Field Theatre for Performing Arts.This play is a great example of "Classic American Theatre". It focuses on the inability to realize the American Dream. Arthur Miller is the author and it's directed by Steven C. Erickson.

SVSU University Art Gallery Presents a Student Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibit

The Student Bachelor of Fine Arts Exhibit will be on display from April 22, to May 4, 2013, in the University Art Gallery at Saginaw Valley State University. The exhibit will feature works by Christine Janowiak, a fine arts major from Saginaw, and Kassie Smith, a fine arts major from St. Charles.Both are graduating BFA majors. This exhibit serves as a completion of their undergraduate program. A reception for the artists will be held Thursday, April 25 from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m.

SVSU Hosts its Annual Honors Program: Thesis Presentation Day

Saginaw Valley State University is hosting its Honors Program: Thesis Presentation Day on April 5, 2013 in the Regional Education Center. Presentations will start at 9 a.m. and end around 3 p.m.Lunch will begin at noon, for those invited, and a keynote speaker will be present. Jaime Jager will be talking during lunch about "Life Approaching Death: Time and Identity in End-of-Life Narratives".

SVSU Students Selected to Present at Athletic Trainers' Annual Symposium

Several students from Saginaw Valley State University were invited to present their abstracts at the 2013 Great Lakes Athletic Trainers' Association Annual Meeting and Symposium. The symposium took place March 13 -15 in Wheeling, Ill.Only a handful of college students receive an opportunity like this each year. Students are chosen to present an abstract at the GLATA symposium.

SVSU Business Students Inducted into International Honor Society

Fourteen Saginaw Valley State University students were inducted in the Beta Gamma Sigma business honor society. The induction ceremony took place Friday, March 22, 2013 at 4 p.m. in the Emeriti room at SVSU.Students are selected by the College of Business and Management, and have to be in the top 10 percent of their junior or senior class, or in the top 20 percent of their graduate class.

SVSU Student Selected for the United States Peace Corps

Saginaw Valley State University student Joshua Fleming has been accepted into the United States Peace Corps. The political science and public administration major from Bay City will leave for Swaziland, Africa in June to begin training as a Peace Corps Community Health HIV/AIDS Educator.

SVSU's Music Department presents a Senior Recital by Amanda Lewis

Saginaw Valley State University presents a senior recital by Amanda Lewis. Lewis will perform Sunday, March 24 at 4 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. She graduated from Frankenmuth High School in 2009 and followed her dreams of studying music. She enrolled at SVSU that fall where she took lessons from Dr. Edward Soehnlen for her first year and Dr. Carl Angelo for the following three years. Lewis was awarded the Rhea Miller music scholarship.

SVSU's Music Department presents a Senior Recital by Rachelle Austin, Soprano

Saginaw Valley State University presents a senior recital by Rachelle Austin. Austin will perform Tuesday, March 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall. Austin was born in Richmond, Michigan in 1987. She is currently a music major with a theater minor. Austin has been studying private voice for twelve years, the past seven years with Dr. Julie Meyer. This past summer, Austin traveled to Lucca, Italy, to participate in the summer opera program entitled Canta in Italia.

Three Saginaw Valley State University students were selected to be for the summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, funded by the National Science Foundation. Chris Silverthorn, a mathematics major from Yale, Mich., Ashley Walsh, a physics major from Snover, Mich., and Amanda Wickens a physics major from Tustin, Mich. were all accepted into the REU program.

Senior Recital by SVSU Music Student Dayna Edwards

Saginaw Valley State University music student Dayna Edwards will perform her senior recital Sunday, March 17 at 4 p.m. in the Rhea Miller Recital Hall.A graduate of Caro High School, Edwards was part of the advanced choir there. Since enrolling at SVSU in 2009, the music education major has been a part of the Cardinal Singers and Concert Choir and went to Washington D.C. to sing at the national cathedral with the Cardinal Singers in the winter of 2012. Edwards holds the Rhea Miller Scholarship.

SVSU Students to Spend Spring Break in N.C. Helping Domestic Violence Victims

Students from Saginaw Valley State University are spending their spring break lending a hand to those in need. A 10-student team from SVSU will travel to Morehead City, N.C., and work with the Carteret County Domestic Violence Program to help victims of domestic violence. The group departs Sunday, March 3, and return Saturday, March 9. The Carteret County Domestic Violence Program provides a mentoring program, a 24-hour crisis line and free shelter to victims of abuse.

SVSU Students Travel to Ga. to Help Military Families

A team of 11 Saginaw Valley State University students will devote a portion of their spring break to travel to Hinesville, Ga. to assist military families in need. The students will depart Sunday, March 3, and return Saturday, March 9.The students will be working with Operation Homefront Georgia, an organization that helps military families with bills, groceries, community events, home repair, and so much more. Students will be working with Operation Homefront staff to assist their efforts.

Students from Saginaw Valley State University are spending their spring break lending a hand to those in need. An 11-student team from SVSU will travel to Atlanta, Ga. to assist with easing the burden of homelessness. The students will depart Sunday, March 3, and return Saturday, March 9. The students will be working with the Medici Project to help soothe the hardship of homelessness.
