Saginaw Valley State University is a comprehensive university with more than 90 programs of study for its more than 9,000 students. Located on a suburban campus in Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region, SVSU is committed to a supportive and empowering environment for students.

SVSU emphasizes undergraduate teaching and learning, and community-based research. In 2015, SVSU received the Community Engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a distinction achieved by only 7 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. By their senior year, 84 percent of students have engaged with community employers and agencies in internships, field placements or some other component of their academic preparation.

SVSU is establishing itself as a leader in STEM education for the Great Lakes Bay Region, partnering with businesses, foundations and school districts to improve students’ performance in math and science at the middle school, high school and university levels.

SVSU senior Terrance Moore's work begins at Saginaw County Sheriff's Department

Since childhood, Terrance Moore has been planning a career in law enforcement. Thanks in large part to his experience at Saginaw Valley State University -- and all the opportunities it presented -- that career already has begun. By the time Moore graduates with a bachelor's degree in May, the criminal justice major will have been working as a deputy corrections officer for the Saginaw County Sheriff's Department at the Saginaw County Jail for two years.

Rashed Aldubayyan couldn't speak much English when the Saudi Arabia native first enrolled in the English Language Program at Saginaw Valley State University in 2010. Five years later, he's mastered the language along with the academics as he prepares to graduate in May and attend the master's program in applied information technology at George Mason University in the fall.

SVSU senior Stephanie Marr chosen for teaching program in Colombia

After receiving her bachelor's degree from Saginaw Valley State University in May, Stephanie Marr plans to combine those two passions by teaching English in other countries. Her first stop in June is Colombia, as she has been chosen for the English Teaching Fellowship by Heart for Change, an organization that brings English teachers to Colombia.

Brandon Skwirsk knew he wanted to become a doctor in the sixth grade. But it wasn't until he began studying for the profession at Saginaw Valley State University that he truly realized the career was a match made for him. "I fell in love with it here," said Skwirsk, set to graduate from SVSU in May with a bachelor's degree in biology.

Eight SVSU students are involved in a new fellowship program hoping to improve the perception of Saginaw. Members of the inaugural class of SVSU's Richard V. They have spoken with leaders in Saginaw and Washington, D.C., and now have begun planning a campaign aimed at bolstering their home community's image.

This includes collaboration with a SVSU Career Services advisor to develop a professional resume and cover letter.
