Saginaw Valley State University is a comprehensive university with more than 90 programs of study for its more than 9,000 students. Located on a suburban campus in Michigan’s Great Lakes Bay Region, SVSU is committed to a supportive and empowering environment for students.

SVSU emphasizes undergraduate teaching and learning, and community-based research. In 2015, SVSU received the Community Engagement classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, a distinction achieved by only 7 percent of U.S. colleges and universities. By their senior year, 84 percent of students have engaged with community employers and agencies in internships, field placements or some other component of their academic preparation.

SVSU is establishing itself as a leader in STEM education for the Great Lakes Bay Region, partnering with businesses, foundations and school districts to improve students’ performance in math and science at the middle school, high school and university levels.

Four Saginaw Valley State University students will compete in the Miss Michigan Scholarship Pageant in June, including one woman whose mother once won both the Miss Michigan and Miss America titles. SVSU students Jaeleen Davis of Saginaw Township; Ashli Maser of Au Gres; Mallory Rivard of Bay City; and Alana Rae Wilson of Monroe are four of the 34 contestants in the pageant.

SVSU Cardinal Formula Racing team places 26th in the world, tops among exclusively undergraduate teams

The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal Formula Racing team earned the fifth-best finish in the accomplished program's history at its most recent international competition. The team finished in 26th place out of 110 colleges and universities from around the world at the Formula Society of Automotive Engineers Collegiate Design Series. The event was hosted at the Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn, Michigan from May 14-16.

Six SVSU graduates pass national certification exam for athletic trainers

Six Saginaw Valley State University graduates passed the Board of Certification national certification exam necessary to become a certified athletic trainer. All SVSU students taking the exam passed during the most recent cycle, giving the school a 100 percent pass rate.

The Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal Formula Racing team will race "one of the most well-developed vehicles" in the accomplished program's history when it faces off against international competition. Brooks Byam, SVSU professor of mechanical engineering and the team's faculty adviser since 1998, has high hopes for No. 73 -- the name of this year's student-built Indy-style vehicle -- on the eve of an annual competition.

SVSU students to present project at annual Science and Engineering Symposium

SVSU student leadership group aims to improve Saginaw's image

Eight SVSU students are involved in a new fellowship program hoping to improve the perception of Saginaw. Members of the inaugural class of SVSU's Richard V. Wolohan Fellowship in Leadership and Service -- all graduates of Saginaw County high schools -- began meeting in fall 2014. They have spoken with leaders in Saginaw and Washington, D.C., and now have begun planning a campaign aimed at bolstering their home community's image.

Moot court team finishes national tourney with best performance in SVSU program's history

Four Saginaw Valley State University students competing together on two teams finished in 21st and 59th place, respectively, out of 80 teams competing in the American Collegiate Moot Court Association national tournament. The competition was Friday and Saturday, Jan. 16-17, in Miami. "This was our best year at nationals, and both teams received a lot of positive comments for their professionalism and their behavior," said Julie Keil, the moot court team's advisor and an SVSU assistant professor

SVSU student receives national honor for peer health education

Matthew Walla impressed national judges, but only because others looked past his timidity three years earlier. The Saginaw Valley State University senior recently was named one of six students nationally to receive the Outstanding Student of 2014 award from BACCHUS Initiatives of NASPA, a collegiate peer education organization with members from more than 340 colleges and universities nationally.

Four Saginaw Valley State University students qualified for a national forensics competition after earning high placement in a recent tournament. The SVSU Forensics Team competed in the Michigan Intercollegiate Speech League (MISL) Fall Tournament -- which tests students' public speaking and debate abilities -- at Oakland University Saturday, Dec. 13.

Forty-two Saginaw Valley State University honors students presented a poster session Friday, Dec. 5. Honors students organized into 12 groups, each researching topics such as genetics, medicine, psychological disorders and visual literacy. Nine projects put together by 28 Saginaw Valley State University students will be on display during the mechanical engineering senior design symposium Friday, Dec. 5 in Pioneer Hall. All mechanical engineering students are required to have a company sponsor their project and must complete a working prototype in order to graduate.

SVSU students qualify for national moot court tourney

In a moot court competition, students act as attorneys in teams of two. They make arguments to a panel of judges by drawing from constitutional law and Supreme Court cases. Judges then decide winners based on public speaking ability, knowledge of cases and of law, and the ability to answer questions.

SVSU student, staff receive regional residence hall recognition

Saginaw Valley State University was recognized by its regional peers for offering exemplary residential experiences for its students during the 2014 Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls Conference at Indiana State University. SVSU received the award for National Residence Hall Honorary Outstanding Chapter, the highest regional honor a chapter can obtain. In addition, Haylie Chamarro, an elementary education major from Oxford, received the Student of the Year Award.

"The Ghost and the Poem" tells the fictional tale of Dexter Westenburg, whose teacher assigns him to write poetry in a journal. Lacking a love for poetry, he travels to the Roethke house and meets a ghost, Benny, whose love for poetry may change Dexter's mind.

SVSU student Haylie Chamarro, of Oxford, earns Student of the Year Award from regional residence hall group

Saginaw Valley State University student Haylie Chamarro, of Oxford, received the Student of the Year Award during the 2014 Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls Conference at Indiana State University. She has served as a resident assistant at SVSU for two years. "I was honored that people would think to nominate me, and then when I found out I won, it was disbelief," she said.

SVSU students select 2014 Homecoming King, Queen

The king and queen were announced at halftime of SVSU football's homecoming game against Northwood University on Saturday, Oct. 25. They were Tom Sutherland, of Carsonville, and Bethany Thrun, of Garden City. The two were selected from among 10 students on the 2014 Homecoming Court, which were determined by a vote of SVSU students. Students then cast a second round of votes to determine the king and queen.

Students cast their votes to select Saginaw Valley State University's 10-student 2014 Homecoming Court. Students then cast a second round of votes to crown the court's king and queen. Those honors went to Homecoming Queen Bethany Thrun, a nursing major from Garden City, and Homecoming King Tom Sutherland, a finance major from Carsonville. The king and queen were announced at halftime of SVSU football's homecoming game against Northwood University on Saturday, Oct. 25.
