Tracy Everett-Janetsky, of Saginaw, among SVSU students to reestablish criminal justice honor society, Alpha Phi Sigma

2014 Jun 11

Saginaw Valley State University's chapter of the criminal justice honor society, Alpha Phi Sigma, has been reestablished in part because of the participation of Tracy Everett-Janetsky and several other students.

Everett-Janetsky, an SVSU criminal justice major from Saginaw, is among the student officers now serving Alpha Phi Sigma. Everett-Janetsky is the group's president.

James Bowers, an assistant professor of criminal justice at SVSU, is the group's faculty advisor.

"For now, the focus is on chapter reactivation and establishing a student body committed to the organization," Bowers said. "The local chapter will be involved in community service such as the annual Adopt-A-Family, a program that allows organizations/people to sponsor needy families sheltered at the Underground Railroad in Saginaw.

"Alpha Phi Sigma is committed to giving back to the community."

Bowers said the benefits of joining Alpha Phi Sigma -- inactive at SVSU since the 1990s -- include the scholarships available from the group's national chapter, leadership opportunities for officers, as well as the resume-boosting effect of listing membership as a credential during a job search. Members also are invited to work with faculty on projects presented during the annual Midwest Criminal Justice Association conference.

To be a member, students must possess at least a 3.2 GPA, completed three full semesters of classes, declare criminal justice as a major or minor, and complete at least four courses in criminal justice-related classes.
