Standish Resident's Painting Selected to Hang in Michigan Congress

2012 Oct 15

A painting by Standish resident Samuel Dantuma will soon hang in Michigan's Congress, having been selected as part of the seventh annual Student Art in the House initiative.

Dantuma, an art major at Saginaw Valley State University, will have his art unveiled and recognized at a reception hosted by members of the Legislative Arts Caucus at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, in the Anderson Office Building in Lansing. Two paintings by SVSU students were selected, including one by Janel Deeren from Caro.

Art in the House is a partnership between the Michigan House of Representatives and the Presidents Council, State Universities of Michigan. Each university may submit up to four pieces of artwork. The art chosen will hang in the Congress for a year, upon which it will be returned to the students.

Both SVSU students submitted a non-objective abstraction painting. Deeren's work is an acrylic painting on canvas, while Dantuma's piece is a shaped painting with spray-paint acrylic on steel.
