SVSU student Tyler Kwapis, of Oxford, and peers receive awards at residence halls conference

2016 Nov 22

Saginaw Valley State University students attended the Great Lakes Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (GLACURH) Conference, which took place Nov. 18-20. The event was held at the Hilton Hotel in Milwaukee. The theme was "Lights, Camera, Leadership!"

Tyler Kwapis, a nursing major from Oxford, was one of the delegates for SVSU.

There, SVSU students participated in a number of workshops where they both presented and networked with other student leaders within the region. As representatives of SVSU, the delegates presented on the topics of communication and leadership, among other things.

SVSU received the Outstanding Advocacy Initiative Award for Gender Inclusive Housing. The winning presentation, titled "The One Where SVSU Gets Gender Inclusive Housing," provided an in-depth look at SVSU's efforts to make all students feel welcomed.

In working with the university's Pride Center and the Gender-Inclusive and Mixed-Gender Housing Steering Committee, SVSU was able to formulate a plan that would promote inclusivity for all students.

The award represents a commitment by a university department or organization to advocate for under-represented groups on campuses.

SVSU also received a Top 10 Program Award for their presentation, titled "Finding Your Way to Leadership," as well as the Regional Student of the Month award for GLACURH.

Additionally, SVSU's delegation was awarded a Top Five mention for their "Hairspray"-themed roll call in which they had to recreate a movie scene in 90 seconds at the conference's opening ceremony.
