SVSU student Pedro Marin, of Grand Blanc, spends winter break volunteering in Orlando

2016 Jan 15

Pedro Marin, of Grand Blanc, this month participated in a service project through Saginaw Valley State University's Alternative Breaks program, which is a student-led organization that sends its members to various states and countries to do volunteer work during traditional school break periods.

Marin, a marketing major, was one of 11 SVSU students to travel to Orlando to help the organization A Gift For Teaching with educational development in the community.

This initiative was one of seven trips being organized by SVSU's Alternative Breaks from Jan. 3-9, during SVSU's winter break.

The initiatives included students traveling to Lynchburg, Virginia, to help the organization Lynchburg Grows develop a sustainable agricultural community; to Orlando to help the organization A Gift For Teaching with educational development in the community; to New Orleans to help the organization Project Homecoming Inc. with disaster relief for those affected by Hurricane Katrina in 2005; and to Nashville to help the organization Project CURE provide medical supplies to nations in need.

The remaining initiatives sent students traveling to Kanab, Utah, to help the organization Best Friends Animal Sanctuary provide care for abused and neglected animals; to Murphy, North Carolina, to help the organization Hiwassee River Watershed Coalition remove evasive plants from the river and provide environmental stability; and to Asheville, North Carolina, to help the organization Asheville Area Habitat For Humanity build homes.
