Pamela Vogel, of Palms, earns SVSU's S.K. Yun Science Award

2013 Aug 20

Saginaw Valley State University presented its S.K. Yun Science Award to two students including Pamela Vogel, of Palms, Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Vogel, who was nominated by Holly Little, an SVSU lecturer of biology, will receive a $500 prize as part of the award. East Lansing's Alexandra Green was the second recipient.

The award, named in memory of the late SVSU physics professor S.K. Yun, annually is given to one or more students with enthusiasm for learning about natural science.

Little in her letter of recommendation described Vogel's accomplishments during a plants and civilization course in the fall of 2012. "Ms. Vogel demonstrated enthusiasm for the content of the course from the beginning, not because she entered my classroom wanting to become a plant scientist, but because she was excited about learning," Little wrote.

Little described one of Vogel's projects -- a report that explained the lifecycle of a crop -- as "the most thorough student report I have ever seen." Little's letter praised Vogel for performing well in the classroom while also raising three children and working for her husband's dairy and alfalfa farm.
