Mike Wells Jr., of Delaware, Ohio, named USBWA Men's Basketball Division II Player of the Week

Mike Wells Jr. was selected the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Week after the 5-foot-8, 170-pound guard averaged 27.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 5.0 assists to lead Saginaw Valley State University to a pair of GLIAC victories last week. Wells Jr. scored a career-high 35 points, including 31 points in the second and 21 consecutive points in one stretch to lead the Cardinals to a 72-66 win over GLIAC South Division-leading Ashland University. He added another 19 points with 6 assists in an 86-69 win over Tiffin University.

For the week, Wells Jr. shot 67 percent (18-for-27) from the field, including 8-of-10 three-pointers, and he was also 10-for-11 from the free throw line. Saginaw Valley State has three consecutive wins, improving to 8-11 overall (5-6 GLIAC).

Saginaw Valley hosts Northwood University on Saturday (Jan. 27) in another home matchup, which will tip-off at 6:00 p.m. at O'Neill Arena.
