East Lansing native Alexandra Green receives SVSU's S.K. Yun Science Award

2013 Aug 20

Saginaw Valley State University presented its S.K. Yun Science Award to two students including Alexandra Green, of East Lansing, Tuesday, Aug. 20.

Green, who was nominated by Edward Meisel, an SVSU lecturer of chemistry, will receive a $500 prize as part of the award. Pamela Vogel was the second recipient.

The award, named in memory of the late SVSU physics professor S.K. Yun, annually is given to one or more students with enthusiasm for learning about natural science.

Meisel in a letter of recommendation described how Green challenged herself academically in his chemistry class. "Her grades have been nothing less than stellar and she asks in-depth questions when appropriate," Meisel wrote. "She not only wants to know the material, but makes sure she understands the material so it becomes applicable to her future."

Meisel pointed out that Green's academic accomplishments extended beyond his classroom. Green's 4.0 grade point average earned her a spot on the SVSU President's List during the 2013 winter semester; she accomplished the feat while serving as a captain for the SVSU women's basketball team.
