2013 Nov 19

Saginaw Valley State University's Peer Health Education group received national praise during a Virginia conference.

SVSU student Chelsea Hummel, of Clio , was a member of the group which advocates healthy lifestyles to fellow students. The team won an Outstanding BACCHUS Affiliate award Nov. 16 at the BACCHUS General Assembly Conference in Reston.

The award was given by The BACCHUS Network, a national group dedicated to college campus leadership. The Peer Health Education group's award -- one of the top accolades given to groups affiliated with The BACCHUS Network -- recognized institutions with enrollment between 5,001 to 12,000 students.

"As an advisor, I always knew they were good at what they did," said Sara Martinez, the group's advisor and SVSU's Student Counseling Center assistant director. "To be recognized nationally solidifies what I knew."

The Peer Health Education group promotes awareness with students regarding alcohol, drugs, sex and other health-related topics.
